How to Decide What University is Right for You

Deciding what universities to apply to can be a tough decision. Once you've applied, choosing which one you will attend can be an even more difficult decision. Take your time and consider all the pros and cons of each. Listen to advice, but remember that this is ultimately your future and your decision. The Tutoring Center in Salem can help you make the choice that is best for you.

Visit Prospective Universities

It is always a good idea to visit the universities you are considering attending. You can read all about their campus and look up videos and pictures, but nothing will help you understand campus life like actually being there. Some high schools offer college trips for universities that aren't too far away. Find out if your school is heading to any of the universities you're considering. If not, ask your parents to take you so you can all get comfortable with your choices. Some universities may be too far to visit, but you can try getting in contact with current students who will be honest about their experiences.

Choose Your Major

If you know what you want to major in, choosing a university might be easier. Research the department your major falls under and investigate what they offer. Get to know who the professors are and what work they've done. Look at the classes offered and consider how they fit into your interests. You can also research internship opportunities they provide and who some of the alumni are.

Consider Your Finances

Some schools are going to be harder to afford because of a variety factors. After filling out the appropriate paperwork, look at your financial aid offers and scholarships to decide what you can afford. Talk it over with your parents so you have a clear idea of where you stand. Keep in mind that some schools are more expensive because they're out of state or private. Decide if it's worth the extra money or if you can get the same education and student life at a more affordable university.
