Spring Break Learning Activities

Spring break is just around the corner and children are excited about going out and having fun outdoors. It is during this time that many children get distracted, but that doesn't mean learning should stop taking place. Today we want to share some great ways to turn spring activities into learning opportunities.

5 Fun Spring Activities That Promote a Love of Learning

  1. Spring sprouts. Help your child learn about plants and sprouts by helping them grow their own. Pick a few sprouts to try, such as beans and sunflower seeds, and work with your child to help them grow their sprouts. Have them keep a journal and record what they observe as the sprouts grow, the care they need, the amount of sun they get, etc. This is a great way to get them interested in learning and observing as well writing and investigating. It is also a great way to introduce them to fun science.
  2. Declutter and categorize. During this time of year, most of us clean out the house and try to declutter. Why not get your child involved? Help them clean out their closet and section out the things that they don't use anymore. Then have them help you gather the things that you have in the home that you want to get rid off.  Small children can help you categorize the things in different boxes and older children can write on the boxes and label everything you will keep, put away, or get rid of.
  3. Yard sale math fun. Once you have decluttered and cleaned, have a yard sale with the items you want to get rid of. Allow older children to put price labels on the items and help you with the yard sale. This is a great way for them to practice their math skills and see firsthand the importance of math in buying, selling, giving change, etc. For most kids, money is always a good motivator. If you tell them ahead of time that they will get to keep a certain percentage of the profit that is made, they will be more excited to figure out percentages and how much they will be getting. You can also tell them that they get to keep whatever they make from their own things that are sold, and encourage them to keep a chart of what is being sold and for what price.
  4. Enroll them in extracurricular classes and academic programs. One fun way to make new friends, learn more, and make the most of this spring break is through extracurricular activities and tutoring programs designed to help your child learn through fun and effective methods. At The Tutoring Center, Salem OR, they have several academic programs designed to teach your child how to learn in a more efficient and less stressful way. Call them right now at (971) 600-3288 and get a free consultation today.
  5. Play with chalk. Chalk is a simple and fun tool for students to use outdoors for some spring fun. They can relax and have fun writing on the floor outdoors. You can encourage your small child to draw shapes and make a chalk picture on the ground. For older children, you can help them play games such as tic-tac-toe, help them draw mazes, and then solve them or walk through them. You can even play a game with words that is similar to Scrabble where you write one word vertically and then have them use the letters on that word to build new ones. Continue using the words to make even more words, building up a large collection of words. See how far they can get with writing words and spelling them correctly using the previous letters from the other words.
